Peasant Woman (Black Walnut)

"I think that most of my whittling projects were created during a time of great worry for me. Dealing with financial problems, trying to build up my business, handling family concerns—all these weighed on me. I eventually had to give up the manufacturers’ rep business because it was unprofitable. I was fortunate to connect with Cryovac and went to work with them in 1964 or so. We moved to Sudbury, Massachusetts in 1968."

Woodworks

Here are photos of carvings and other larger woodworks by my grandfather, Theodore Treadwell II, better known as Ted. These pictures were taken at an exhibit of his pieces in Bellingham, WA, where he now lives. He began wood carving in the 1950s, though his fascination with the craft began much earlier, at the age of 4, as he watched his father whittle a model sailboat for him (pictured behind the title above). Completely self-taught, he used some carving models in books for inspiration and created other pieces straight from his imagination. His sense of humor shines through in “Free Spirit Totem,” while his attention to minute detail is evident in his bird carvings and other pieces. Later works of cabinetry and clockmaking show his careful, patient way of bringing his ideas to fruition. Most of the pieces in the exhibit were loaned by family members across the country who have enjoyed them over the years, and for whom Ted is an inspiration.
